What is Indonesia Council?

Established in 2000, the Indonesia Council is the peak professional association for scholars and educators to promote and support the study of Indonesia within higher education. The Council sits within the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA), the peak body for university experts on Asia in Australia.

Our members are drawn together by a common interest in Indonesia and a commitment to promoting the value of that knowledge through education and research in Australia and Indonesian institutions and beyond.

ICOC is the flagship biennial event for Indonesia Council, with hosting duties rotating with each iteration. Find out more about previous ICOCs on our website.

Why should I join IC as a member?

To allow us to continue this mission, please consider joining Indonesia Council as a member:

Paid membership allows us to cover our modest operating costs (including maintaining our website) and to support keynote speakers at the biennial ASAA conferences.

More importantly, membership provides added benefits for you, including eligibility for:

  • Postgraduate and early career researcher prizes, grants and bursaries
  • Dedicated member events and workshops
  • Special members-only newsletters
  • Other events, activities and subsidies as suggested by you

Indonesia Council (IC) Postgraduate Bursary Prize Criteria

The Indonesia Council (IC) is offering two competitive bursaries valued at $250 each to support postgraduate (PG) student members to attend the Indonesia Council Open Conference (ICOC) 2025. These bursaries are designed to recognise excellence in academic presentation and assist with conference attendance costs. The bursary is intended as a partial contribution towards the cost of attending the conference. It is not intended to cover the entire cost of attendance. No additional financial support is available beyond the bursary.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. IC Membership: Applicants must be current postgraduate student members of the Indonesia Council (IC) at the time of application and throughout the conference.
  2. In-Person Attendance and Presentation: The bursary is intended for in-person attendance at the ICOC 2025. Virtual or remote presentations do not qualify.
  3. Abstract Excellence: The bursary will be awarded based on the quality and excellence of the submitted abstract. Applicants are encouraged to seek support from their academic supervisors/mentors on the development of a high-quality abstract for a conference paper.

Application Process:

  1. Submission: Submit an abstract for the ICOC 2025 conference. Once your abstract has been accepted, send an email titled “Application for IC Bursary” to the Indonesia Council Grants and Prizes Officer, Monika.Winarnita@unimelb.edu.au, by 14 March 2025. The email must include proof of abstract acceptance and conference registration.

Selection Process:
